I need to know if this oil pump is on the way out, or just plain dead. (This is a 1989 Mazda 323, by the way)What is the best way (without a compression tester) to test an oil pump in a car's engine?
i own repair shop and the easiest way to do this is hook a direct line up to it with a gage on it,and see what it reads,a compression tester wont help you with a oil pump anyway ,it wont test oil pressure, good luck.,,PS i don't know why you would think you could use a compression tester on this anyway its for testing the engine compression. What is the best way (without a compression tester) to test an oil pump in a car's engine?
your welcome. Report Abuse
IF THE PUMP WAS OUT YOU ENGINE WOLD BE KILL DEAD IF YOUR MOTOR HAS LOW COMPRESSION ONE WAY TO TESTED IS TO TAKE OF THE MOTOR OIL CAP IF OIL STARS SPILLING OUT THAT'S LOW COMPRESSION MAKE SURE YOU CHECK YOUR OIL LEVEL
Typically the gagues or ';idiot'; light on your dash will reflect something is wrong or is going wrong. There really isn't any way to test without a compression tester.
If you are going to check for oil pressure by putting your finger over oil outlet make sure you have 911 on speed dial this can cause oil to be forced into the skin if pressure is high enough. Listen to Dodge Mans answer it is right.
If you have no oil presser testing gauge or pressure needle gauge in your dash, check to see if your oil light is flickering on and off at idle when hot. If it is you have low pressure.
Another way if you have no tools is to locate the oil pressure switch and pull it out. Start the engine just for a few seconds and you should should see oil pouring out of the hole very rappidly, you should not be able to stop it by putting your finger over it useing a cloth. If you can stop the oil from coming out by just lightly touching the hole you have low oil pressure.
