How can Obama promise that we will soon be free from overseas oil?

Like Obama said, alternative fuels are an investment. How can he promise to millions of Americans that we will have alternative fuels if none have really been proven to be realistic in the current time? How f'd are we if scientists can't find an alternative fuel, taxpayers have spent lots more money further bringing us into further poverty, and we will have a shortage of oil. More promises that he shouldn't be making until he KNOWS he can accomplish them? How can Obama promise that we will soon be free from overseas oil?
He did not say we will be free from overseas oil.

He said the United States at maximum production could not produce enough oil to meet American demand. Within ten years, however, we can lessen our dependence on oil.How can Obama promise that we will soon be free from overseas oil?
Bio-fuels just don鈥檛 work, and there is no substitute for oil that we know of that is more efficient and can market itself better than oil.

The process to make ethanol actually consumes more energy to make than you get out of it. And furthermore it has had deleterious effects on the prices at the supermarket pushing all products, such as meat, cereals, oils, and everything that is made from corn way up in price.

Obama and the rest of the democrats have let the ban on oil drilling expire, but they will ban it again as sure as Obama is a socialist. We need a real plan that incorporates drilling for oil, both in ANWR and offshore. ANWR potential is estimated to be a million barrels per day for the next 30 years.

I would say that this bio-fuel wish is a pipe dream at best, so its best that we lay it to rest.
Obama can promise whatever he wants (and he has). So can McCain (and he has too). So what if what they promise isn't remotely possible? So what if there's 45 tons of evidence to back up the fact that what they propose is not only impossible, but that it's also not within the powers granted to the President of the USA in the constitution to do what they say they will do as President?

As long as they're both telling crazy stories about things they plan to do but won't possibly have the power to do once elected, what's the difference?

i just hope ethanol is not his idea of an alternative fuel.

the truth is we cannot be completely independent off of gas. It is impossible for us to not use gas because plastic is made from oil. That means your mechanical pencils, ketchup bottles, tires. All made from oil so what he wants to do is impossible. Yes we need to explore alternative fuels but in the meantime, all other countries drill. Why can we not? In reality, we should have done it 10 years ago.

The thing about obama is that he is SOO smart. He knows that most people are dumb and unknowledgable about what is really going on. He says what sounds good to people. He says that we can be completely independent on fuels. We really cannot but people hear him and they will listen even though we cannot.

He is the smoothest liar i have ever seen
Obama recognizes the priority and would hopefully put resources into the research and development. The Republicans could have spent the trillions blown on Iraq into research into alternative fuels, but it was not important to them. If they had done so, we might already have legitimate options. If the government considers it a priority, a solution can be found. We sent a man to the moon. We can certainly come up with alternative fuels that are reasonable options.
If George Bush had spent the last 8 years pouring all the money he's poured into Iraq into R%26amp;D of alternative energy sources, we wouldn't have to worry about overseas oil. We might not have to worry about oil in general, because we might not have to still be using it. Almost a decade of lost time and money that could have gone into alternative energy is criminal. So is the Bush administration.
We already have alternative fuel sources. We've been had it for the longest time. Its just that its not our main source of fuel and it takes a little bit more investment to convert over it. Obama is making sense. INVEST IN FUEL ALTERNATIVES. We are going to invest in helping the alternative sources get out there to america. And oil will run out, OIL WILL RUN OUT. On top of that, if we keep going down the path that we're going with oil, we'll probably all fry to death before we can even touch the last reserves cuz of global warming. Obama has a dream, and so did Martin Luther King, it'll work we just need to believe in that dream.
because for some crazy reason that's what people want to hear.

Now perhaps I am a bit partial to the subject of drilling because my husband works in the oil field right now, then again, my husband has other skills that have kept him working before the oil boom and that will continue to keep him working long after the last well is drilled. but anyway right now that is where our living is made. Personally I would like to see a decrease in foreign oil, however you and I both know that right now there are no alternatives (realistic ones anyway). So no we cannot just stop drilling, That is unless you are ready to go back to the horse and buggy. For me it is simple I LIKE MY JEEP! and I like to drive it! and until we are independent in alternative fuels I believe we should drill and crate as much oil for ourselves as we can so that we are not so dependent on other countries. and one day when there is a reliable energy source other then oil, then he can make his promises, but facts are facts, and lets not forget gas is not the only petroleum based product we use today!
';How can he promise to millions of Americans that we will have alternative fuels if none have really been proven to be realistic in the current time?';

Why do you say it isn't realistic ?

People are driving alternative fuel vehicles as we speak !...just not as many as gasoline...

This is America man !...we can do this !... 10 years is not unrealistic.

We just need to commit to doing it, and get it done.
He never promised we would soon be free from overseas oil. Off shore drilling will take 5-10+ years before we see an actual drop of oil. Oil drilling is a long term goal, we need to focus on the short term goal of what can be done before the oil is actually produced.

i.e. more fuel efficient cars, wind, solar, etc.

Same way he promises everything else about which he knows next to nothing. He opens his mouth, moves his lips and the promises flow forth. It's easy for him. He even changes the promises depending on who he's talking to at the moment.
He also proposes increasing fuel efficiency standards. We can send a man to the moon and we can't make a car that gets good mileage, I don't think so. America can lead the world in developing these new technologies which will create millions of new jobs.
Hes promising all sorts of things he cant deliver.

More concerning, hes promising tax cuts for 99% of the population, and yet already is pushing for over a trillion $ of new spending one he gets in office. Hows that work?
Because, once Russia and the Middle East and China call the government debt they hold, then we will be 100% owned by one of them.

Then, when they ship oil in from other countries, it will be from our home country.

See? easy, breezy.

Its better to invest now than a couple decades later when the entire supply of oil is gone. You have to think about the long term goals not just the short term ones.
didn't Mccain say we will be free from OverSEAS OIL AND GAVE HIS DATE SOONER THEN OBAMAS. HYPOCRITES!
If everyone is too poor to drive then we dont buy gas and are finally free from oversea oil !
He is responsible for what he says. If he doesn't do it, he will be another G.W. Bush
because he is full of s.h.i.t
