Olive is one of the best oils to use. It is high in the good type of fat, monounsaturated. This type of fat actually helps your cholestorol and is very good for your heart. Canola is basically the same as olive so use either. Olive gives more flavor so use when you want to impart that flavor during cooking. Canola is relatively tasteless and can be used for most cooking purposes.





Corn and vegetable are okay but not as good as canola. Generally speaking, use canola as your everyday cooking oil and olive when needed for flavor. Chuck corn and vegetable unless for some reason the recipe needs it.





Butter is the worst. Contains mostly saturated fat which is terrible for your heart and cholestorol. Butter is better for flavoring but use it sparingly. Yes, anything cooked with butter will taste better but it certainly isn't healthy for you.

I think there is less cholesterol in olive oil,but a lot more calories
Absolutely, although butter is completly healthy too. Olive oil is good to use on your skin as well it is used for professional massage and actually adds nutrients to your body.
Olive oil is considered a ';good fat';. Some oils (particularly margarine and spreads) contains trans-fat which is very unhealthy.
Olive oil is healthier than all the cooking oils, but heating it to high temperatures destroys many of the health benefits and it adds a slightly bitter taste to baked goods. Canola oil is the next best, and doesn't lose the benefits when used at high temperature. Use olive oil for sauteing, dressings, making sauces; use canola oil for baking and deep frying (if you deep fry).





Butter or margarine? Butter is a natural product that does not contain trans fat or hydrolized fats.Margarine is not. This is something we learned in university cchenistry back in 1996 - don't eat any margarine except Becell - butter is better!
(Extra virgin) olive oil is definitely healthier. And if you're really serious about health, try organic olive oil =)

All fats and oils have the same calories per tablespoon, more or less. Many people say saturated fats are bad for you, and most of these are solid at room temperature. Butter is one of them. So is vegetable shortening.





When cooking with oil, the important thing to think about is whether it breaks down at high temperatures, which can have unhealthy effects. Corn, canola, and EXTRA LIGHT olive oil all don't break down very much at high temperatures, like deep frying temperatures.





I would avoid vegetable oil, because it is allowed to contain cottonseed oil, which may have more pesticides than other kinds of oil, since cotton is not a food.





There are 3 kinds of olive oil to think about. Regular olive oil is good for conventional pan-frying, extra light olive oil is good for deep frying. Extra virgin costs more and has special (natural) flavors in it that disappear once you heat the oil. You can fry with it, but you are throwing away the flavors you paid extra for.

I hear the olive oil has some benefits over some other oils, I'm not exactly sure why though. One thing I can say is that the taste is so much better! I have used it for a long time.
I have always had problems deciding which is better. If you go to the experts, they seem to give conflicting information. My daughter just returned from Sullivan U and working with Emeril -who claims that vegetable oil is better however, as a believer in the Word of God, they used Olive oil - virgin and extra, so I tend to believe that it might be better. I also use only butter - I can't stand margarine. So,. who's right? Go to the site listed. I read it and found some very interesting information. I hope it helps you. Now - does it answer your question? It didnt' really answer mine. It might still boil down to what you are cooking, trans fats contents and anything else that is an issue with the individual...in other words - what he wants to give up, or take out, or keep. (smile)

Yes, olive oil is definitely better than butter, and I'm pretty sure it's better than vegetable and corn oil.





Also, if you want something that is lower in fat (all fats have about 14g of fat per Tbsp or two Tbsp, I can't remember), you can try cooking sprays. They do the same stuff but there is virtually nothing in them.





Oh, and according to this website, canola oil is actually the best. Have you ever seen that stuff called Enova? I hear that's really healthy.
