Applesauce would be better and better for you! Also if it asks for water replace it with milk. This will make your cake moist. However if you are cooking red velvet then stick to the ingredients. Milk doesnt work for that kind of cake for some reason!Can I use butter instead of oil for my cake?

I do remember that you can substitue apple sauce for oil, it still keeps the cake moist.
You can use butter but you have to use a little less than a cup . i would use 3/4 of a cup. And make sure it is room temp. and the eggs as well. This will make the cake a little more fluffier if you mix a few minutes more.
you can use applesauce it works pretty good. mayo (as weird as it sounds) keeps it SUPER moist
If you want to substitute butter for oil, melt it gently first, let it cool, and use exactly the same volume of melted, cooled butter as you would have used oil. The cake may turn out slightly richer, and possibly different texture-wise, but it certainly won't do it any harm, and may in fact improve the recipe!
